Adele and I watched “When Harry Met Sally” last night. It stars Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan who are really good together. I bought Adele that movie and several other as part of a “chick flicks” packet on ebay. Most of the movies we’ve seen before but all are romantic comedies (including Father of the Bride I and II). There are scenes in those movies that we feel put Adele into labor with one of our children because she laughed so hard. We’ve watched it before but it’s always fun to laugh together (particularly after a long week of activity, family visiting from out of town, and many projects).

One of the things I value most about my wife is her laughter. It’s contagious. It stirs my soul (read QueenofTheHill’s post on this recently). I absolutely love hearing her laugh. It’s one of the favorite things I love about her.

My friend Tia Graham wrote yesterday about the winter doldrums. It’s only natural that cold and brown bring that feeling out. A good belly laugh is one of the best cures for any blue feeling. Let me know your favorites and maybe I will do a post on the top ten belly laugh movies. I am also interested in inspirational movies. What are the top inspirational movies of all time? While we’re at it…books. What are you readiing that is making you think?

Inspirational movie: Places in the Heart. Inspirational book: To Kill a Mockingbird. I don’t watch movies more than once usually, nor do I re-read often. But I could watch Places in the Heart and read To Kill a Mockingbird over and over….
And the most thinking-est book of late (I’m sure Tia will agree) is hands-down, Crunchy Cons by Rod Dreher.

I’ve got to agree with Sarah & Tia – Crunchy Cons is DEFINITELY the most recent book that’s made me REALLY stop and think…

In my formative years I think that the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Narnia series (septology?) were some of my most inspirational. I loved them, and I think they helped shape my character because they have great characters that are still flawed. Real heroes.

Belly laugh movies – hands down it has to be Monty Python and the Holy Grail. There’s no other movie out there that comes close!

    Dr. H::
Crunch Cons…it’s now atop my list. If you recommend it, and Sarah and Tia…it must be fabulous. I read the Hobit in 12th grade for English class. Perhaps someday I’ll blog about almost getting arrested as we were filming the movie for an English project out in the woods near my high school in Daytona Beach.

Also, you are invited to come over sometime and watch the Monty Python in our surrond sound home (surrounded by little voices…sometimes piercing!)

Zoolander always makes me laugh out loud but there is definitely one scene in there that might offend some… not that they show the details per se, just allude to it. It’s just plain silliness for the most part.

I also love the movie, “Elf” for Christmas laughing.

Crunchy Cons is the most recent thinking book; before that it was At the Corner of East and Now by Frederica Mathewes-Greene.

For laughs….we often resort to SNL clips :-) . And the one we quote the most and laugh hard at is So I Married An Axe Murderer. We’ve seen it about 15 billion times. The kids like to put on Napoleon Dynamite at least once a month but it’s not as much “laugh out loud” funny as others.

And we can watch the new show 30 Rock online; it’s hilarious!

I think “Princess Bride” is the funniest movie. I always wind up with a good belly laugh and I’ve seen it a gajillion times. Usually funny movies are a little tacky, but “Princess Bride” is beautifully done and rather unique, I think.

“Secondhand Lions” will inspire you to live your best life.

“Schindler’s List,” though dreadful, will inspire you to do something in the face of evil — even if you ARE a schmuck.
Everyone must see it once; but only once.

You didn’t ask about these, but I’ve gotten carried away, so here are some freebies:

The original “An Affair to Remember” never fails to bring me to tears, so I proclaim it the “most romantic” award. (Chick flick of the century.)

“North by Northwest” with Cary Grant keeps you pinned to the edge of your seat. “Most suspenseful.”

When are the Academy Awards? Perhaps we should plan a party to view them (with surround sound?), wear sparkly things, black ties, and sip beverages in glasses with very tall stems. We could choose our own Best Dressed, etc., etc.
